Privacy Policy
This policy is written in plain language. It covers the RipeLeaf app, this website and our support email. If anything is unclear, email support@ripeleaf.app.
The short version: the RipeLeaf app doesn't collect your personal data. Your plants, photos, notes and reminders stay on your device and, if iCloud is on, in your own private iCloud account, which we have no way to look into. There's no RipeLeaf account, no sign-in, no advertising and no tracking. The only personal information we receive is what you choose to send us by email, plus some summary statistics Apple gives every developer (explained below).
Who we are
RipeLeaf is a plant-care app for iPhone, made by an indie developer in Australia ("we", "us"). The developer is the seller named on RipeLeaf's App Store page, and is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. Contact: support@ripeleaf.app.
What the app stores, and where
On your device
RipeLeaf stores your information locally using Apple's on-device database: plant names and nicknames, species and care schedules; photos you take or add; care history, notes and diary entries; and your app settings. A short list of upcoming tasks (plant names and what's due) is shared on your device with the RipeLeaf home-screen widget. RipeLeaf asks iOS to apply its strongest file protection, which keeps the app's files encrypted while your device is locked. None of this is sent to us.
In your own iCloud
If you're signed in to iCloud and iCloud is allowed for RipeLeaf, the app syncs your data across your Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit service. It's stored in the private area of your iCloud account, not on any server of ours, and we have no way to view or retrieve it. Apple provides iCloud and handles that data under the Apple Privacy Policy, and it may be stored on Apple servers outside your country. To stop syncing, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud and turn RipeLeaf off in the list of apps using iCloud. Your plants stay on the device.
We don't run any server or backend that receives information from the app.
Camera and photos
With your permission, RipeLeaf uses the camera so you can photograph your plants. You can also pick photos from your library using Apple's photo picker, which gives RipeLeaf only the photos you choose, not your whole library. Photos are kept on your device (and in your iCloud if sync is on). We never receive or analyse your photos. You can turn camera access off in Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
Location and weather
If you allow it, RipeLeaf uses your approximate location to show today's local weather and tailor care tips. To do this, your device sends that approximate location to Apple's WeatherKit service, which sends back the forecast. Apple handles that request under its own privacy policy. RipeLeaf doesn't save your location, and it's never sent to us. Only the latest weather result (such as the temperature) is kept on your device. Location is optional. Without it, the app still works and shows general seasonal tips instead. You can change this any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RipeLeaf.
Reminders and your lock screen
Care reminders (water, feed, rotate and check on) are scheduled on your device by iOS itself. They don't come from a server and don't send any data off your device. Reminders include your plant's name, for example "Monty could use a drink", so that name can appear on your lock screen. If you'd rather it didn't, set Settings → Notifications → Show Previews to "When Unlocked". The home-screen widget also shows plant names. Manage reminders in Settings → Notifications → RipeLeaf.
Exporting your garden
You can export your plants, history and photos as a file. It's created on your device, and it goes only where you choose to send or save it. Once you share it, it's handled by whoever or whatever you share it with.
Purchases and ratings
RipeLeaf offers a one-time in-app purchase. Apple handles payment entirely through the App Store, and we never see your name, Apple ID, card or payment details. Occasionally, at a good moment, the app may show Apple's standard "rate this app" prompt. Any rating or review goes to Apple and the App Store, and public reviews can be seen by everyone, including us.
Information Apple gives us
Like every developer, we can see summary reports from Apple in App Store Connect, such as download and sales numbers by country. If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers on your device, Apple may also send us usage statistics and crash reports for RipeLeaf. These help us fix bugs. They come from Apple, not from code in RipeLeaf, and they don't tell us who you are. You can stop sharing them in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Share with App Developers.
Tracking, analytics and selling data
RipeLeaf doesn't track you across apps or websites. It doesn't include any third-party analytics, advertising or tracking code, and it doesn't build a profile of you. We don't sell or rent personal information, we don't share it for advertising, and we don't give it to data brokers.
When you email us
If you email support@ripeleaf.app, we receive your email address, your name if it's shown in your email, and whatever you write or attach. We use it only to reply, to fix the problem you've told us about, and to keep a record of the conversation. We don't add you to a mailing list or use your email for marketing. For UK users, our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in answering your message and supporting the app.
Our support email is forwarded by Cloudflare's email routing service and stored in a Google Gmail account, so those companies process it on our behalf, possibly outside your country. We keep support emails for up to two years after the conversation ends, then delete them, unless we need to keep them longer to deal with a legal issue. You can ask us to delete your emails sooner.
This website
ripeleaf.app is a plain website with no cookies, no analytics and no tracking scripts. It's hosted on GitHub Pages, and the domain is managed through Cloudflare. Like any web host, GitHub may record technical information such as your IP address when you visit, to keep the service running and secure. See GitHub's privacy statement.
Security
We keep what we hold to a minimum. In practice that's support emails, and the account they're stored in is protected by a strong password and two-step sign-in. No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach affected your personal information, we would tell you and the relevant regulators where the law requires it.
Deleting your data
- A plant: delete it in the app to remove it with its photos and history. If iCloud sync is on, it's also removed from iCloud and your other devices.
- Everything on a device: delete the RipeLeaf app.
- The iCloud copy: go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage (called "Manage Account Storage" on some iOS versions) → RipeLeaf, then delete its data. Or delete your plants in the app while sync is on.
- Support emails: email us and ask, and we'll delete them.
Because your plant data is on your device and in your own iCloud, not with us, you control it directly. We can't delete or recover it for you.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the Australian Privacy Principles, UK GDPR, New Zealand's Privacy Act, Canada's PIPEDA or US state privacy laws such as California's), you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, and to have it corrected, deleted or sent to you. You may also have the right to object to how we use it. In practice, the only personal information we hold is support emails. Email support@ripeleaf.app to make a request. We'll respond within one month and won't treat you differently for asking. You can withdraw a permission (camera, location, notifications) at any time in iOS Settings.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to fix it. You can also complain to your local regulator, such as the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, the UK Information Commissioner's Office, New Zealand's Office of the Privacy Commissioner or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
RipeLeaf is suitable for all ages but isn't designed specifically for children. The app doesn't collect personal information from anyone, children included. If a child under 13 has emailed us, a parent or guardian can ask us to delete it, and we will. We'll also delete it ourselves if we realise.
Changes to this policy
If RipeLeaf changes in a way that affects your privacy, for example a future optional paid feature that needs an account, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date before that change is released. Any feature that collects personal data will be optional and will explain what it collects when you turn it on.
